Lucknow: Acting on the directions of Police Commissioner Lucknow Tarun Gauba and Joint Police Commissioner (Crime & Headquarters) Aparna Kumar, under an ongoing drive against crimes targeting women, a team constituted by Inspector-in-Charge Mohanlalganj, Ram Babu Singh — working under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Md. Mushtaq, Additional DCP Rallapalli Vasanth Kumar, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohanlalganj Rajesh Kumar Singh — arrested Smt. Rawat, the wanted accused in Case No. 277/2026 registered at Mohanlalganj police station.

Brief background of the case

On July 26, 2026, complainant Manoj, son of Shri Ram and resident of village Parwar Paschim, Bijnor police station, Lucknow, reported that his daughter Seema was married to Amit Kumar, son of Ramchandra, resident of village Hulaskheda, Mohanlalganj police station, Lucknow, on March 7, 2026. According to the complainant, his in-laws’ family had been physically assaulting his daughter over inadequate dowry, and her husband Amit, along with her father-in-law Ramchandra (son of the late Pyare) and her mother-in-law, had been pressuring her to bring at least ₹2,00,000 from her parental home. On July 25, 2026, the family received news that Seema had died. Based on this complaint, a case was registered at Mohanlalganj police station.

On July 28, 2026, the accused named in the case — Amit Kumar (husband) and Ramchandra (father-in-law) — were arrested and sent to judicial custody. The victim’s mother-in-law, Smt. Rawat, had been absconding, and a search was launched for her, with the Mission Shakti team of Mohanlalganj police station also deployed to trace her. On August 6, 2026, police teams arrested her and she has been sent to judicial custody.

Accused’s statement during interrogation

During questioning, the accused said her son had received less dowry than promised, even though the bride’s family had assured them of additional money. This had led to repeated disputes between the two families. She claimed she had no idea Seema would take her own life, and pleaded, “Please forgive me, sir — I made a mistake.”
